Billy’s Meatball Sub
I’m not sure how he is so good… but my husband can assemble a damn good sandwich. The combination of textures and flavors is always perfection.
A key to this meatball sandwich… homemade meatballs and marina. Check out my recipes for both!
Ingredients
homemade meatballs (view my recipe)
homemade marina sauce (view my recipe)
high quality bread (recommend salt & olive oil loaf from Whole Foods Bakery)
mozzarella cheese, sliced
provolone cheese, sliced
fresh parsley
Directions
- Make your homemade marina sauce. You can view my recipe here.
- Make your homemade meatballs. You can view my recipe here. For these sandwiches I cook the meatballs in a deep sauté pan with a generous amount of olive oil so that they get crispy on all sides for added sandwich texture.
- Preheat oven to low broil.
- Add extra salt & olive oil to the top of the bread loaf and then put the entire loaf in the oven.
- After bread is golden brown, remove and allow to cool just enough so you can handle it. Then cut the sandwich lengthwise (but do not cut all the way through the bread. You want the bread to remain intact and not two pieces.)
- Put sliced mozzarella on the bottom of the bread then put bread back in the oven to melt. Once melted, remove from the oven.
- Add a small amount marina sauce, then homemade meatballs. Top with slices of provolone cheese. Put back into the oven to allow provolone to melt.
- Remove from oven and add a touch more marina sauce & fresh parsley.
